Beethoven- The Legend (1770-1827)
Ludwig van Beethoven does not need an introduction. This maestro from Germany rules the hearts of many. The symphonies and sonatas that he wrote for the piano are special and rare. This man who went completely deaf towards his fag end composed the most beautiful music of his time. He lived most of his life in Vienna, Austria. The famous 9th symphony (ode to joy) is known to be his best composition.

Beethoven learnt piano from his father and from an organist Christian Gottlob Neefe. Later, at the age of 22 he moved to Vienna where he learnt to play violin from Joseph Haydn. Beethoven wrote most of the sonatas in his early career, the most famous one being the "Pathetique". Soon at the age of 24 Beethoven started to turn deaf. His friends conversed with him by writing on the books. He wrote symphonies for the entire orchestra-total nine in number, the most well known were the third (eroica), fifth and the ninth.

Beethoven's symphonies were extraordinary along with his other works. He loved a woman called Fanny but never married her. The romantic sonatas seem to be a dedication to his true love. Each and every work of Beethoven is a unique piece in its own. Although he composed various symphonies and sonatas, his favorites were the piano concertos, string quartets piano sonatas and symphonies. His career is divided into 3 phases. The first phase is the period upto 1802. Some masterpieces of this time were the 1st and the 2nd symphonies, first to third piano concertos and the 20 piano sonatas (includes the ever loved 'moonlight' sonata).

The middle phase is the most interesting one. It is this time when he started getting deaf. Beethoven's music in this period represents struggle and heroism. This was evident from the broad base of his music. Apart from other compositions of this period, Fidelio the only opera composed by him was also a part.

They call the last period of Beethoven's life- the romantic period. This phase was a complete representation of his talent. It had compositions which gave an insight into Beethoven's intellectual capacity and the ability to bring out his personal expression. In this regard, his 9th symphony 'Missa Solemnis and the Hammerklavier sonata are world best. Every musician is bound to be inspired by the genius of Beethoven at any point of his career.

Beethoven was the greatest composer ever and a born genius. He created magic with each of his compositions and was never held back because of his weaknesses. An example of dedication to Beethoven's work is the European Union, his "ode to joy" from the 9th symphony is adopted as the national anthem by the European Union. He died in 1987, but is alive even today in his profound creations and will continue to live so for generations to come.
