Celine Dion And Her Music
Celine Dion, born in the town of Charlemagne in the Quebec province of Canada in 1968, is the youngest among 14
children. Her parents raised their children in not too good a state of finances, but nevertheless music truly
flowed in their blood. The family had a piano and with its help Celine and her siblings learnt music at home.
At the age of just 12 years, Celine composed and sang with her mother and a brother a song in French that was to
later change the entire course of her life. A tape of the recorded song was sent to Rene Angelil, a scout for
budding musical talent. For a long period of time Rene simply kept the tape with him but did not find the time to
listen to it. The Dion family waited patiently for a response, which had not come.
Celine's mother clearly believed that the song rendered by Celine was truly remarkable. A long time later she
rang Rene and simply told him that she knew that he had not listened to Celine's song on the tape. She further told
him he would have himself found Celine's singing remarkable had he even listened to the tape even once.
Rene then dug out that tape at his home in 1981 and listened to Celine's song on it. He found her voice, musical
range, and singing was so good that he cried because he realized that he had struck gold. At this point in time
history was made for it catapulted Celine Dion straight into the world of pop music. Even in those early days
Celine showed great promise for she won the Gold Medal in the Yamaha Song Festival in Tokyo in 1982.
Rene then took upon himself the task of gradually grooming the raw talent of the then 14 year old Celine Dion
into the musical diva she is today. He even mortgaged his own house to put up the money for the recording of
Celine's first record.
By 1988, Celine was a household name in Quebec. She had already tasted superstar status in Canada by picking up
Felix awards. She also won the Eurovision Song Contest held that year in Dublin, Ireland. In 1990, Celine Dion
recorded her first pop album, Unison, which made the people in the US sit up and admire her singing talent.
In 1992 she recorded the title track for the Walt Disney animated film Beauty and the Beast. It won her an
Academy award and a Grammy too. It made her popularity immediately soar. In 1993 she recorded her third album Color
of my Love, an expression of her love for Rene Angelil. They got married in 1994, despite the 26 years age
difference between them.
Celine has never looked back since then. In the 14 years thereafter she has logged sales of over 200 million
albums and composed, sung live and recorded music albums at a prolific rate. Celine is a soprano and sings songs
with great restraint and control over the entire musical range. One of her most popular songs is My Heart Will Go
On from the movie Titanic.
